Genetics Institute of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Genetic Counselor to support the DNA Diagnostic Laboratory (DDL). DDL is a high-complexity, clinical, molecular genetics laboratory integrated within Johns Hopkins Genomics—a partnership between the Institute of Genetic Medicine and the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The DDL is committed to offering state of the art clinical molecular testing for inherited disorders in compliance with the highest regulatory standards.  The DDL applies next generation DNA sequence analysis (Whole Exome Sequencing and NGS panels) to clinical diagnostics in additional to Sanger sequencing.

The JHU School of Medicine has a Genetic Counselor Career Ladder in place to support the promotion of Genetic Counselors based on their experience and expertise, and this ladder provides a clear pathway for professional progression, academic research time, and opportunities to build programs in genetic medicine.  Incoming Genetic Counselors are evaluated against the ladder to appropriately slot them into their current tier; tiers range from GC1 through GC4.   The DGM is seeking Genetic Counselors from all clinical backgrounds including new graduates to apply for this posted position.  All levels of experience will be considered.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the DDL team to assure high quality clinical genetic testing.  Includes routine effective communication with other members of client services staff, Lab Directors, Lab Manager, analysts, and technical lab staff.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of protocols for test requests including lab requisition forms, LIMS updates, EPIC workflows, and electronic result reporting.
  • Provide marketing support on behalf of the DDL and JH Genomics in the form of marketing materials, attending and organizing meetings (local and national), and providing input for the website and social media outreach.
  • Coordinate getting correct and updated information on national resources (Concert, GTR)
  • Participate in the mentorship and assessment of trainees who rotate through the lab.
  • Outreach and develop tests with referring providers
  • Other duties for DDL and JH Genomics as assigned by Lab Directors and/or Administration.
