Genetic Counselor

Genetics Institute of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Genetic Counselor to support the DNA Diagnostic Laboratory (DDL). DDL is a high-complexity, clinical, molecular genetics laboratory integrated within Johns Hopkins Genomics—a partnership between the Institute of Genetic Medicine and the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. The DDL is committed to offering state of the art clinical molecular testing for inherited disorders in compliance with the highest regulatory standards. The DDL applies next generation DNA sequence analysis (Whole Exome Sequencing and NGS panels) to clinical diagnostics in additional to Sanger sequencing.
The JHU School of Medicine has a Genetic Counselor Career Ladder in place to support the promotion of Genetic Counselors based on their experience and expertise, and this ladder provides a clear pathway for professional progression, academic research time, and opportunities to build programs in genetic medicine. Incoming Genetic Counselors are evaluated against the ladder to appropriately slot them into their current tier; tiers range from GC1 through GC4. The DGM is seeking Genetic Counselors from all clinical backgrounds including new graduates to apply for this posted position. All levels of experience will be considered.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Functions: Responsible for providing pre- and post-analytic support for DDL services including interpretation of genetic variants; report writing; results communication; coordinating incoming samples; communicating with referrers, payers, and/or patients before and after testing; teaching residents, fellows, and genetic counseling students; manuscript writing; liaising with JH clinical departments; and providing the genetic counseling services needed for various DDL grants and sponsored programs.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date. Must maintain certification by completion of the required CEUs for the period prescribed by the Board. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Successful completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications: 2+ years’ experience working in a clinical molecular diagnostic lab.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications: Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics OR Must have Active Candidate Status for the ABGC Board Examination and must successfully obtain ABGC Certification within one year of hire date.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Physical Requirements: Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment. Lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. Ability to move about workspace.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
