General Description

The Director of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center (the Director) serves as the leader of simulation-based experiential learning and research across Johns Hopkins Medicine. This person oversees a very busy Simulation Center that provides more than 150,000 Learner hours and more than 40,000 room hours per year. The Center is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSiH) in all five possible areas. The Director will utilize their broad experience in simulation teaching, their clinical knowledge and their excellent leadership skills to create a vision for the Center and to supervise faculty and staff. The Center uses a broad spectrum of simulation modalities including standardized patients and teaching associates, human patient simulation, virtual reality, task trainers and computerized simulation. The Director will also lead discovery and learning in simulation-based activities and be recognized as a thought leader and innovator. The Director will promote innovative and collaborative activities to prepare learners to:

  • provide state-of-the-art patient care and develop as confident and competent practitioners
  • function in interprofessional teams and engage in reflective practice
  • engage in research to foster health outcomes and promote innovation in teaching and learning 

The Director reports to the Vice Dean for Education and the Johns Hopkins Hospital Chief Nursing Officer, and works in close collaboration with a wide variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to education and finance leaders in the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Johns Hopkins Health System, Johns Hopkins International and the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality.  

The successful applicant must be able and willing to devote at least 50% time to this role.

Responsibilities:  Key responsibilities include: (1) leading strategic operations and initiatives; (2) ensuring integrated staff operations and processes; (3) identifying and implementing synergies and a sustainable organizational structure that promotes excellence in teaching, learning, and research in simulation-based activities, (4) Identifying and planning for emerging technologies in simulation-based learning and research, and (5) identifying and leveraging relationships, and raising funds, to ensure financial sustainability.  This position will lead a team of ~20 staff and faculty, as well as more than 180 casual employees.

 Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Develops strategic plan for the Simulation Center, including mission, goals, objectives, communications, marketing strategies, and sustainability
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with the Simulation Center's mission, goals, and objectives, supportive of strategic decision making, and consistent with safe and effective operations
  • Oversees the use and operations of the JHM's simulation learning resources including simulation and lab space, equipment, and personnel
  • Develops staffing and scheduling models to optimize utilization of simulation assets
  • Analyzes processes, work operations, quality records, and other sources of data to identify opportunities for improvement and barriers to achieving stated outcomes, and to develop solutions
  • Works with the Vice Dean for Education, the Johns Hopkins Hospital Chief Nursing Officer, the Administrator for SOM Education, and the Senior Administrative Manager of the Simulation Center to develop short-, medium-, and long-term business plans that include forecasted staff and staff salaries, equipment procurement, hardware and software replacement cycles, revenue generation or cost offsets, and allocation of human and other resources
  • Ensures annual operating and capital budgets are consistent with strategic and operational plans and School of Medicine and Hospital budget guidelines
  • Provides leadership with technology innovation and application related to human patient simulation systems, medical systems, and supporting technology
  • Collaborates with education leaders in the School of Medicine, the Hospital, and elsewhere to develop innovative educational courses, simulation courses and simulation scenarios and ensure that simulation education requirements are aligned with accreditation and credentialing requirements
  • Ensures integration of Simulation Center activities across the Johns Hopkins University and health system
  • Participates on JHM committees and other bodies related to simulation education and training

Academic and research responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to ensure coordination and to eliminate redundancy in simulation learning experiences
  • Continually delivers, evaluates, and improves simulation education with innovative and high-quality education methods based on evidence and simulation standards of best practice
  • Forecasts state-of-the-art instructional technologies and plans and leads its implementation across programs
  • Ensures simulation education quality assurance processes including peer-review and teaching assessment

 Fiscal

  • Works with the Administrator for SOM Education and the Senior Administrative Manager of the Simulation Center to develop and monitor annual operating and capital budgets, including forecasting the timing and cost for purchasing new equipment and technology
  • Drives revenue through the utilization of excess capacity
  • Collaborates with Development and Alumni Relations to identify funding opportunities and initiatives to support sustainability
  • Uses resources in accordance with sound fiscal principles and remains within budget

Relationships

  • Develops, leads, and collaborates with one or more advisory bodies
  • Solicits feedback from stakeholders in relation to simulation education program coordination, processes, and program design
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with current and potential users (including Johns Hopkins Health System entities), systems staff, and other institutional departments in order to anticipate future needs, identify opportunities, and facilitate improvement
  • Fosters partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders and communities regionally, nationally, and internationally to strengthen the ongoing development of simulation education and research
  • Promotes the external positioning of the Simulation Center using social media, marketing, and scholarly activities
  • Actively participates in the national and international professional arena of simulation education through meetings, speaking opportunities, publications, and other collaborations to maintain  Johns Hopkins Medicine's status as a world-class leader in simulation-based learning and research
  • Contributes to the Society of Simulation in Healthcare by participating in committees and contributing to/collaborating in workshops, presentations, and articles

Other

  • Supervises team of faculty and staff who oversee simulation and standardized patient activities, operations, administration, and research. Supervisory responsibilities include recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, evaluating, and initiating disciplinary action as needed, according to HR policies and procedures
  • Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging trends in the use of simulation and virtual reality in healthcare education including basic theory, design, and implementation, by networking, maintaining a literature base, evaluating new methods and materials, and participating in education opportunities

Qualifications

An advanced degree in nursing, medicine, public health, business, or simulation-based research field (ex. human factors, organizational psychology, health policy and management, etc.) is required, along with significant simulation experience to include expert knowledge about and experience in simulation techniques in healthcare and academic program development. Experience leading strategic planning, marketing, business development, and complex operations is required. Must have significant experience with various simulation modalities, such as mannequins, part-task trainers, and AV systems.

 Experience:

The successful candidate will have experience:

  • working in a clinical or healthcare environment
  • in personnel management and supervision
  • in developing and implementing a strategic plan including budget projections and analysis

Preferred qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in a health related-discipline highly desired
  • Experience managing a simulation center preferred
  • Knowledge of MD curriculum preferred
  • Experience working with and inspiring faculty to envision or augment curriculum with simulation activities strongly preferred

Existing strong relationships within the national and perhaps international simulation community preferred
