THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is the founding campus of the University System of Maryland. UMB opened in 1807 and serves as Maryland's public health, law, and human services university. Dedicated to excellence in education, research, clinical care, and public service, UMB enrolls over 6,700 students in six nationally ranked professional schools --dentistry, law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work -- and an interdisciplinary Graduate School . The University offers 62 doctoral, master's, baccalaureate, and certificate programs and confers the majority of the professional practice doctoral degrees awarded in Maryland. UMB integrates teaching, research, and service, and supports an innovative culture focused on preparing students to address the complexities associated with the health, human services, and social welfare environment.
Since 1918, the University of Maryland Graduate School has grown to become among the most respected schools in the country offering graduate education and training in biomedical, health, and human service sciences. We offer Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs in these areas of study. We also offer dual degrees with the University's professional schools including PhD/MD, PhD/PharmD and PhD/DDS degree programs, and we participate in inter-institutional studies in biochemistry, and gerontology with other University System of Maryland campuses.
All doctoral students are actively engaged in research with faculty members to address some of society's most pressing problems and biomedical research's most challenging questions in basic and translational research. These innovative efforts, supported by research grants and contracts, are undertaken collaboratively with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical center, the Institutes for Human Virology, and others.
Over the past six years the Graduate School has transformed itself by hiring new faculty and creating master's degrees focused on non-traditional learners including the M.S. in Health Sciences, M.S. in Health and Social Innovation, M.S. in Global Health, and a M.S. in Violence Reduction. Additionally, multiple certificate degrees allow students to focus in the areas of aging, applied thanatology, biomedical entrepreneurship, global health systems, global health innovation, public health implementation science, integrative health and wellness, and intercultural leadership. The Graduate School will launch a new PhD program in Health Professions Education in Fall 2020, and it will be among the largest programs in the United States educating the next generation of health professions faculty.
