General Summary/Purpose

The success of the School of Nursing sponsored projects and research-funding strategy hinges on the identification of new prospects, as well as the continuation of sustained relationships with existing funding sources. To this end, the Grant Writer will work closely with administrative and research leadership to assist faculty in the coordination, editing, and formatting of grant applications to all sponsors, including foreign, federal, state, foundation, corporate, private profit and non-profit, and institutions of higher education.

 

Developing of an innovative and results-driven program, especially with centers and institutes internal and external to the School of Nursing will be necessary to foster an effective and proactive grant writing and research funding strategy. To this end, the Grant Writer will engage with School of Nursing and University partners in creative and strategic thinking to identify and assist with internal and external funding proposals, and provides an overview of known funding opportunities and keeps updated funding announcements as continuation of the services provided by the Office for Science and Innovation.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

The Grant writer will report on a day-to-day basis to the Associate Director, Research Administration and be accountable to the Vice Dean for Research. This individual will work with the School of Nursing leadership, faculty, and staff to develop comprehensive approaches to secure a consistent pipeline of funding.

This position requires excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively, and to interact successfully with a diverse constituency internally and externally.

 

Major responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with School of Nursing faculty to prepare, write, develop and deliver proposals. Collaborating with faculty to enhance and expand their existing research collaborations as well as identifying, cultivating, and executing new research funding opportunities.
  • Research grant-making organizations and analyzing them to identify likely funding sources for specific School of Nursing programs or research.
  • Developing and maintaining mechanisms to coordinate and track ongoing funding opportunities.
  • Streamlining process for matching faculty with funding opportunities.

 

The Grant Writer will work closely with SON leadership to build a deep understanding of school and center funding needs, in order to strategically match potential funding opportunities with faculty initiatives. This will include researching and expanding discussions on new or innovative funding mechanisms across all sponsors and following up on research needs identified by the Associate Director, Research Administration and the Vice Dean for Research.

 

Working with academic leadership to enhance collaborations across Johns Hopkins University, the Grant Writer will develop and manage a schedule of Faculty Professional Development workshops and events related to writing and research funding.

 

They will schedule workshops that connect grant-writing resources and facilitate the work of proposal teams.

Finally, the Grant Writer will actively participate in the development of systems to implement, monitor, and assess strategies required to achieve performance responsibilities outlined above.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Master's degree with a major in English, journalism, communications, marketing or other related technical/scientific field.  Must possess in-depth subject matter knowledge. 

  • One (1) year related experience.
  • Writing samples may be required: Demonstrated excellence in written skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Certification from the American Grant Writers Association (AGWA) or the Grant Professionals Association (GPA)

  • Experience working in a health related not for profit sector.
  • Knowledge of NIH funding mechanisms preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
