The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland
Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a 12-month, full time, non-tenure track faculty position that will serve as the Assistant Graduate Program Director to oversee the UMBC’s Data Science Master's and Certificate programs offered at its Shady Grove campus while helping with the academic and administrative work for the same program running at UMBC’s main campus. Appointment rank will be based on applicant experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, this position serves as the Assistant Graduate Program Director of UMBC's programs leading to a professional master’s degree and certificate in Data Science. This cross-disciplinary program is offered to professional students through a partnership between the College of Engineering and Information Technology; the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences; the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering; and UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies (DPS).
The incumbent is expected to teach two courses per semester in the program. In addition, the incumbent will: oversee curriculum and instruction; recruit and supervise qualified part-time faculty; support ongoing strategic initiatives for data science program; collaborate with DPS on program marketing, student recruitment and retention activities; pursue business development opportunities with industry; and carry out the administrative duties associated with academic program oversight. The candidate is expected to attend departmental meetings, and faculty gatherings, and social events at UMBC’s main campus and also help with academic and administrative work at the main campus program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified candidates will hold a Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a PhD degree in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to applicants with at least five years of relevant academic or professional experience, preferably in the computing, informatics, or data science disciplines. Teaching experience in classroom and/or on-line environments within the computing disciplines at graduate/advanced undergraduate levels is desired. Candidates should have strong organizational, management, and public communication skills necessary to manage and grow a highly active and visible professional academic program. Exceptional candidates will have and maintain strong professional networks with industry and academic practitioners in the computing, informatics, and data science professions and be comfortable working in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary environments. Experience and interest in data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and/or natural language processing.
Previous academic administrative experience.
Previous curriculum development and assessment experience.
Interest and experience in advising, mentoring, and working effectively with a diverse student population.
Experience collaborating with industry.
SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
