The Health Promotion Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs and services for Hopkins Students, with a particular focus on the Homewood and Peabody campuses. They supervise (recruit, train, motivate, and advise) student groups, and develop effective health promotion materials. They design and deliver presentations on a variety of health promotion topics, including: sexual health, sleep management, stress management, mental wellness, fitness, body image, and nutrition. They provide administrative support such as ordering materials, maintaining educational resources, and scheduling rooms for events. They work closely with other members of their department (Director, Alcohol and Other Drugs Specialist, Gender Violence Specialist, etc.), serving as back-up for their roles if needed. In addition they collaborate closely with other departments (Student Health & Wellness Center, Counseling Center, Recreation Center, Communications, etc.) to develop wellness campaigns and programming.
Primary Job Duties:
Coordinate activities of (3) student groups, including training, running meetings, recruitment and retention of members, and managing campus-wide awareness events. These groups are currently: PEEPs (peer health educators), Stress Busters (seated massage), and HKB (tobacco cessation).
Develop awareness campaigns using various mediums (fliers, ads, bulletin boards, yard signs, social media, text messaging, etc.) to address college health issues such as physical activity, nutrition, tobacco control, STI prevention, stress reduction, eating disorders, contraceptives, and healthy relationships.
Develop and produce advertising and marketing materials both in print and electronically working closely with the Student Wellness Communications Associate.
Assist with updating department website relative to health and wellness information. Manage and edit online social networking sites with current information and updates. Manage text messaging platform to deliver health promotion texts twice weekly.
Manage health and wellness events and observances to include all aspects of planning and scheduling. Events include but are not limited to: Great American Smoke Out, World AIDS Day, Safe Spring Break, Sexual Health Awareness, Eating Disorders Awareness, and Nutrition Awareness.
Assist with surveys, data collection, and other types of qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Assist with the creation and implementation of innovative presentations and programs based on sound public health principles and evidence-based best practices, including presentations during freshman orientation.
Conduct educational programs on health and wellness issues as needed for specific student groups, such as residential advisors, athletic teams, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and other student organizations.
Collaborate with various University departments such as, but not limited to: Campus Recreation, Athletics, Student Leadership and Involvement, Residential Life, First Year Orientation, Counseling Center, Health & Wellness Center, Dining, Communications, and Fraternity & Sorority Life.
Network with area health educators and maintain active participation in local / national organizations such as ACHA and NASPA.
Assist students with direct health education and appropriate referrals.
Work closely with other members of their department (including Director, Alcohol and Other Drugs Specialist, and Gender Violence Specialist), filling-in for some of their responsibilities if needed.
Train students in intervention procedures for alcohol use (TIPS), and as sober party monitors. Have the ability to sign-off on party approvals if needed.
Ability to be flexible with schedule. Nights and weekends may be needed.
Be willing and able to take on other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion, or a related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
Credentials as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in similar or related field.
Prior experience working with college-aged population preferred.
Special Knowledge and Skills:
Working knowledge of health promotion and behavior change theories.
Experience with literature review, needs assessment, and program planning/implementation.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
Ability to understand and address behavioral health concerns of a culturally diverse university student population.
The ability to work as a collaborative team member with students, faculty, and staff throughout the campus community.
Excellent listening, oral presentation, and written communication skills.
Proficient computer skills.
Ability to be creative in design and marketing techniques
