POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Board of Directors and working in partnership with the organization’s Co-Founders, the Executive Director has responsibility for the overall success of HLF, including oversight and management of all elements of HLF’s operational and financial stability and programmatic supervision.  The Executive Director partners with HLF’s Co-Founders and others to ensure that HLF’s program, fundraising, marketing, and administrative operations are run efficiently and are meeting goals.  The Executive Director has an important role in working with the Co-founders to develop the vision for HLF and engaging staff, the Board and others in working toward that vision.  The ED is a strategic partner who supports HLF’s vision by ensuring programming quality and assessing opportunities and risks around programmatic and organizational growth.  The Executive Director represents HLF to external stakeholders, leads the organizational evaluation of HLF, and develops an engaged Board of Directors that effectively supports the organization. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Management Leadership

  • Oversee all facets of the organization including the delivery of program, efficient internal operations, strong external relations and the continued professional development of the staff
  • Manage HLF senior leadership and ensure effective management of all staff
  • Build and develop a talented team that embraces HLF’s culture; ensure leverage of human resources throughout organization
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with funders and key partners, in coordination with fundraising team

 

Operational and Financial Strategy and Integrity

  • Analyze current and potential organizational structure, goals and growth against operational capacity required to ensure Co-founders and Board of Directors are able to make informed decisions about organizational direction
  • Through direct project execution and oversight of staff, assume ultimate responsibility for all aspects of organization’s operations and program administration
  • Ensure program and administrative staff have capacity, skills and resources necessary to effectively run organization’s operations and programming
  • Oversee development and maintenance of technologies and systems
  • Work closely with staff and Board of Directors to ensure sound financial management and operational best practices

 

Board Management

  • Serve as primary point of contact for Board of Directors and Advisory Board
  • With support of Operations team, manage all Board logistics, including meeting preparation, report development, communications

 

Program Implementation

  • Collaborate with Co-founders to bring program plans to fruition
  • Manage execution of all program logistics, including contracts, evaluations, client engagement
  • Ensure soundness of program data collection and analysis; rely on program data to support program decision making
  • Develop program evaluation process

 

Human Resources

  • In partnership with Co-founders, craft strategies to attract, retain and promote high quality staff
  • Develop training plan to address skills gaps across organization
  • Develop and implement compensation plan for organization
  • Manage hiring process, organizational onboarding, annual benefits selection process with staff and staff performance evaluation process
  • Evaluate timing for adding additional Human Resources support

 

Risk Management

  • Assume responsibility for ensuring HLF is in compliance with all contracts, grants and partnership agreements
  • Work in concert with Co-founders, Board of Directors and outside counsel, as needed, to ensure legally compliant operations and governance of organization
  • Ensure all operational policies and procedures are up to date, legally compliant, understood and in active use by all staff

  • Ability to prioritize and manage different roles and tasks, with attention to deadlines
  • Computer skills and literacy is essential

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated understanding of, and passion for, the work of HLF
  • Ideally 10+ years experience in nonprofit leadership, including operations, finance, program administration, Board management, human resources and IT
  • Preferably experience in nonprofit sector in Baltimore
  • Experience with managing large teams with diverse talents and responsibilities
  • Bachelor’s degree required, focus in management, finance preferred
