The Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development and Community Engagement works to support the mission and integrity of the Johns Hopkins University, to develop and formulate future plans to reach institutional and departmental goals, to lead initiatives and to create an excellent experience for our students through their participation in athletics. Reporting to the Senior Associate Athletics Director, directly oversees all student-athlete programming, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and leverages athletics and recreation to build community both on campus and in the local Baltimore area. The individual will also be a member of the game operations staff and assist with in-game marketing and promotional efforts.
Essential Job Functions:
Creates, directs, and leads all student-athlete development initiatives as well as the student-athlete development team. Tasked with delivering a robust, holistic development program to include (but not limited to) NCAA required trainings, leader development, health/wellness, career preparation, and other areas of strategic priority. Responsible for the organization of all programs, as well as the assessment thereof. Routinely communicates with student-athletes and staff about planned events and opportunities.
Participates in the facilitation and planning of Blue Jays LEAD programming.
Serves as department liaison for Student Athlete Advisory Committee and manages department Student-Athlete Development initiatives.
Leads the effort to leverage athletics and recreation as a tool for community building and stakeholder engagement. Builds relationships with on-campus constituents, takes innovative approach to design/creation of community-focused events, and creates/oversees several community building events throughout the academic year.
Coordinates and oversees all community service projects within the department, and continues to advance the ways in which departmental staff and student-athletes can serve the local Baltimore area. Coordinates participation in the annual President’s Day of Service.
Sport Administrator responsibilities (programs TBD), including oversight of sport(s) and supervision of coach(es). Will travel with teams to select competitions and all championships.
Serves as the Cheer liaison and advisor.
Oversees the mascot program. Coordinates student staffing, as well as game/event appearances (both on and off campus).
Supports the Director of Marketing and Sponsorships in the operation of the Junior Jays kids program.
In collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Sponsorships, assists with on-campus marketing efforts, including the student loyalty program.
As a member of the game operations team, manages game operations for selected home varsity athletic events which would include communication to officials and visiting teams, security, payment to officials and scheduling workers.
Participates as a key member of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships operations team. JHU will host these Championships over Memorial Day weekend in 2020 and 2022.
Position requires extensive and proactive interaction with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members.
Collaborates with Student Leadership and Involvement on programming efforts.
Serves as department POC to Homewood Student Affairs for all required student trainings not specific to athletics.
May be called upon to serve on campus-wide committees and/or working groups as needed.
Creates, disseminates, and analyzes the data from the annual Student-Athlete Satisfaction Survey. Makes recommendations for areas of improvement.
Co-lead of student-athlete & family orientation (in conjunction with Asst AD for Compliance).
Serves as the department representative to Homewood Student Affairs for first year orientation.
Responsible for the development and routine updating of the Student-Athlete Policy Manual.
May potentially serve as the department Senior Women’s Administrator.
May potentially serve as the JHU staff representative to the Centennial Conference Snell-Shillingford Symposium.
Other responsibilities and special projects as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Three years related work experience in a collegiate athletics environment.
Athletic administration experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
Must be able to work additional hours during athletic events, including nights and weekends; excellent communication skills; ability to work well with others.
Knowledge of basic software packages; understanding of athletics administration in a university environment.
