The mission of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is to accelerate equitable and sustainable access to life-saving vaccines through the generation, synthesis, and use of evidence to inform decision-making and action. IVAC’s work focuses on disease epidemiology, vaccine economics and supply, monitoring and evaluation of vaccine introduction and center programs, and advocacy and communications activities to increase the profile of and global action on vaccine-preventable disease.
IVAC seeks to fill a Communications Associate position to support programmatic and communications activities for projects focused on translating and disseminating evidence and developing advocacy messages and resources for routine immunization. The Communications Associate will be a member of the Policy, Advocacy, and Communications (PAC) team and will provide scientific communications and advocacy support to three projects disseminate evidence and accelerate global access to routine immunization:
Value of Immunization Compendium of Evidence (VoICE) and Pneumonia and Diarrhea Advocacy (StopPneumonia) – approximately 50%
Sustaining Access to Vaccination in India (SAVI) – approximately 30%
Targeted Assessment Study Coordination (TASC) – approximately 20%
Specific responsibilities will vary from month to month depending on project needs and will not exceed 100% FTE at any point in time.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Position overall objectives and specific responsibilities
Conduct targeted literature reviews and synthesize available literature
Develop and review technical materials, including fact sheets, brochures, slide decks, and other resources
Develop content for infectious disease, immunization, and health system-focused blogs and other digital media
Represent projects on advocacy partner coalition teleconferences and with external partners, as
Plan and support implementation of advocacy events
Manage public-facing websites and support website management for other projects as needed
Generate new website, social media, and other content both independently and through cross-sharing from partners
Implement project strategies and work plans as developed by project lead
Support project lead in tracking metrics and completing grant reporting
Participate in writing, editing and disseminating IVAC’s annual Pneumonia and Diarrhea Progress Report
Develop materials and curricula for technical capacity building efforts
Review manuscripts of recently completed immunization related studies and abstract key ideas and results
Participate in the creation of media materials and launch planning events
Content creation for a variety of vaccine and vaccine preventable disease related topics for posting on web-based tools, twitter and through the IVAC general media list.
Bachelor's degree in related field.
Four (4) years related experience.
Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the * JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Master’s degree in related field preferred
Communications, advocacy or journalism experience
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
Excellent technical communications skills and ability to write for a range of audiences
Ability to communicate scientific information in easily understandable concepts and pieces
Ability to understand and synthesize scientific literature, distill large amounts of information, and generate key messages
Ability to appropriately communicate with external partners
Knowledge of vaccines, pneumonia, diarrhea and other major global infectious diseases, and understanding of basic epidemiologic and statistical concepts.
Experience with social media and website content generation and management
Experience leading/managing projects and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Self-motivated and able to work well independently and in teams
Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Wordpress, and citation manager software
Experience in vaccines and immunization, health systems, infectious diseases, or a related area
Experience developing training curricula
Experience with design software/programs (i.e. Canva, Adobe InDesign, others)
