This position will work with two teams. The Design Specialist will design for and primarily serve the University Information Systems team. The Design Specialist will also participate as part of a design team at the Technology Innovation Center (TIC) to share design process and guidelines.
The University Information Systems (UIS) team is responsible for implementing and supporting enterprise-wide solutions for students, faculty and staff. UIS supports 9 academic divisions and all administrative offices. UIS supports and guides educational / academic and administrative initiatives across enterprise that support the academic mission of the university. The systems that UIS supports are mission critical and require high-availability, 24X7 monitoring and on-call support, including, but not limited to Student Information System (SIS), ID carding system, Astra Scheduling system, System of Records for international students, faculty, staff & scholars, Financial aid system of records (PowerFAIDS), Admission system of records (Slate), enterprise travel registry, etc. Team utilizing Agile development methodology and mostly uses Microsoft tools for development.
The Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is uniquely positioned within Johns Hopkins to help design, build, and deploy novel clinical applications that strive to improve workflow, outcomes, and patient experience. The applications the TIC designs, builds, and supports are critical to healthcare operations.

Focus and Responsibilities of this Position
The responsibilities of the Design Specialist – Student Services Applications include design research, user experience design, and user interface design for enterprise applications.
This position will work directly with the Student Services Excellence Initiative (SSEI) at Johns Hopkins University on applications that fall within student services and its extensions. The Design Specialist will follow design guidelines and documentation for existing Technology Innovation Center applications, while applying some individuality and creatively interpreting that guidelines to apply it to several existing and future enterprise applications.
SSEI is committed to improving each student’s encounter with the university, throughout the continuum of experience from prospect to student through alumnus. It takes a student-centric view to ensure that at each touchpoint with a student services office or system, students and faculty will have a positive experience, encounter processes that are streamlined and simplified, and engage with modern technology that meets their needs. Applications include but are not limited to: career services, admissions, advising, billing, records and registration, and financial aid.
The Design Specialist, while focused on student services applications, will participate as part of the design team at the Johns Hopkins Medicine Technology Innovation Center. TIC design team members provide expertise in design research, content, marketing, user experience, visual, and front-end development. The team is looking for a talented individual with specific expertise that compliments these competencies. This individual must also be willing to learn and participate in existing team competencies.
