The Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health (GI), Department of Population, Family & Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Program Officer II, Communications & Marketing for Advance Family Planning (AFP). AFP is a nine-year (2013-2022), $96.6 million project that aims to increase the financial investment and political commitment needed to ensure access to quality family planning through evidence-based advocacy. The Gates Institute is the lead coordinating partner for AFP.
The Program Officer II – Communications and Marketing will lead execution of AFP's advocacy communication strategy in collaboration with AFP's Communication Manager and Program Officer for M&E/Communications. He/she will also lead the next stage of refinement for AFP's SMART Advocacy Portfolio toolkit.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Write and edit a range of AFP publications from start to finish: news stories, case studies, advocacy briefs, newsletters, web pages, journal articles, posters, and graphics.
Lead AFP SMART Advocacy Portfolio refresh process (both print and web versions) with input from multiple stakeholders
Manage all content produced by AFP and develop modes for disseminating the AFP SMART advocacy toolkit
Work with in-country AFP partners in 8 countries and the Francophone West African region to share multiple news items and web stories per month
Contribute to development of a project dashboard and tracking of dissemination and use of AFP SMART
Lead donor communications and understand donor sensitivities and branding requirements
Provide programmatic support for AFP's media advocacy implementation and scale-up
Negotiate with vendors and consultants to deliver quality, timely products including graphic design, translation, printing, web, mobile app, and freelance writing
Facilitate communication meetings and skills-building sessions and represent AFP in external meetings and events.
Ability and willingness to travel internationally. International travel may necessitate travel and work outside regular business hours
Master's degree in Science and/or Communications, Public Policy, Journalism, or related field and/or equivalent experience of at least four (4) years implementing complex and comprehensive communication strategies with a focus on international programs public health, specifically family planning and/or advocacy.
Field experience working in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East preferred. French language is a plus but not mandatory.\
Demonstrated effectiveness in strategic problem solving, framing issues, and leveraging advocacy-related communication to attract both donors and the global family planning community.
Demonstrated ability to work with program designers and managers, researchers, and trainers to develop content in collaboration with a wide range of technical experts and inputs.
Familiarity with meeting facilitation and adult learning techniques
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Strong writing and editing skills
Experience making challenging subjects accessible for lay audiences, including understanding, interpreting, and communicating complex data
Organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically and undertake independent problem solving
Specific communications skills, such as:
Expertise in SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel for presentations and analyses
Proficiency in Drupal, HTML or similar content management systems
Knowledge and prior use of Photoshop and Adobe Creative Suite
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work at a global scale and in a variety of developing country settings, using appropriate technologies
