Director, Research Impacts and Proposal Development - (1800019F)
The Director of Research Impacts and Proposal Development reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Sponsored Programs Administration and is responsible for providing administrative leadership and strategic counsel to grow the University of Maryland Baltimore's (UMB) grants and broader impacts portfolio. Broader research impact is the evaluation of and measurement of the economic and societal impact of research conducted in and by UMB.
The Director will develop and implement broader impact goals and activities that utilize evidence-based principles, practices and methods, and will work to make resources available to successfully implement them, including data collection and reporting tools. This position is expected to work with senior leadership on campus, research administration teams within each school, researchers and their collaborators, and communities in Baltimore and afar. The position will also oversee and facilitate complex, multi-school proposals which will include contributing to proposal strategy development, technical solutions, and cost strategy.

Leads the Research Impacts and Proposal Development team.
Establishes a common broader impact language for UMB, including broader impact goals and activities.
Partners with the research community to create tools that will enable UMB to evaluate and document human, social and economic impacts of research, and maintain a data repository that will support coordinated broader impact initiative.
Manages the internal systems and processes for the Sponsored Programs Advancement Team, including oversight and supervision of all complex, multi-school proposals.
Develops strategy and proposal management plan – defines and maintains timelines/schedules, organizes resources, creates proposal outlines and storyboards, and collaboratively conducts ongoing reviews through the development and submission process.
Contributes to defining strengths, discriminators, and themes as well as innovation and vision for the future of the proposed effort.
Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders including faculty and their partnering collaborators, school and university administrators, and community leaders; counsel others on strategies for the preparation of successful proposals and addressing broader impact activities within their proposals.
Facilitates training and education efforts for the development of complex and multi-disciplinary proposals and the development and implementation of broader impacts activities. Including formal and informal training to offer training recipients a complete understanding of sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, procedures, and practices as it relates to proposal development and broader research impacts.
Works in conjunction with senior institutional leadership to direct strategic planning processes, establish and achieve long range goals, and ensure implementation of strategic plans that are aligned with the institution's vision, strategic plans, and goals.
Partners with ORD marketing team to increase the quality and effectiveness of communication and education strategies for policymakers, public and other collaborating universities.
Experience: Ten (10) years spent progressively building experience clinical research and/or research administration with eight (8) years in sponsored programs.
Supervisory Experience: Six (6) years of experience at management or leadership level.
Experience working in a busy academic medical center.
Experience working with multiple external funding sources.
Experience working with faculty on developing broader impact statements.
Experience in leadership, policy development, and oversight role at an institutional level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency working with quantitative operational, research, and financial data is essential.
Strong collaborative style and team orientation that models and encourages the value of customer service while driving consistency and building partnerships with constituents.
Deep knowledge of medical center research policies, federal and non-federal policies, regulations, and processes.
Ability to actively build new and develop existing relationships with sponsors and federal agency officials on proposal and broader research impacts.
Ability to set vision, lead others, and work within a team environment to accomplish goals.
Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, including senior leadership, faculty, support staff, grants/contracts agencies, and vendors.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent computer skills, including the ability to use a variety of software packages.
Outstanding organizational skills are necessary to manage many competing timetables and responsibilities. Ability to delegate and effectively supervise and plan for the timely and successful completion of short and long-term objectives.
Commitment to continuous improvement in processes, systems, resources, and technology.
