The Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) seeks to establish relationships with leading industrial employers to better connect our undergraduate students with career opportunities. We will do this by creating and executing various programs within BME, including an Industrial Internship Program (IIP) that will connect BME upperclassmen with leading companies to build relationships that will continue into senior year projects and potential post-graduate careers. The IIP and other BME Programs will be designed and built through targeted networking efforts and the creation of a BME constituents network across the United States. Multiple engagement strategies such as special events, personal visits, and outreach via multiple communication channels will support the establishment of relationships with BME alumni and other stakeholders in leadership positions at leading companies. In turn, those relationships will support the development of internship positions and other opportunities for Johns Hopkins BME undergraduate students within those companies.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
This position will support the experiences of our BME constituents (current and former students) and collaborating corporate partners through internship and practicum experiences, research opportunities, regional events, and development of industry relationships and networks. This position will help to create the experience of being a BME constituent and a collaborating corporate partner both inside and outside the classroom. Specifically, this position will design and implement programming aimed at creating internship positions and other avenues for career development for Johns Hopkins BME undergraduates through partnerships with leading biomedical industry employers.
Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy to engage BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners through which internship positions can be established. Identify, build, nurture and strengthen relationships that results in long-term engagement with Hopkins BME.
Design activities to build a community of BME constituents and collaborating organizations with the goal of internship and career opportunities for JHU BME students. These activities will include regular meetings and/or events to facilitate interactions outside the classroom to build ties between BME constituents, collaborating corporate partners and faculty.
Develop an annual work plan outlining BME engagement goals and objectives for BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners aimed at maximizing interest in and involvement with the department and its programs.
Create and maintain accurate database of students, internship interests, and collaborating corporate partners.
Support to BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners
Manage, promote, and lead efforts to engage Hopkins BME constituents in various engagement opportunities, with a goal of creating and building an increased departmental presence among potential employers, including alumni, industry leaders, and other stakeholder groups.
Serve as a liaison for departmental leaders and collaborating corporate partners to ensure that IIP relationships are established and properly stewarded.
Provide support and guidance to students and collaborating corporate partners on an individualized basis as needed by connecting them with information, networks, resources, faculty, and other forms of support.
Provide a high degree of customer service and prompt, courteous response to requests for information and assistance from BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners. Maintain direct and regular communications with BME constituents, departmental leadership and collaborating corporate partners through phone calls, email, and in person meetings.
Lead a wide range of activities to engage and involve BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners in meaningful ways. This includes responsibility for planning educational enrichment events such as seminars, webinars, and live talks; cultivate relationships with BME constituents and collaborating corporate partners, and engage them to ensure they are getting the most out of the program.
Manage logistics for events including reserving rooms, IT support, and parking; ordering supplies and catering; marketing; and tracking RSVPs.
Create and manage a BME constituents’ relations plan for BME Programs, including events, newsletters, special events, and virtual programs.
Contribute to the implementation of BME Programs to help achieve annual participation goals for both current students and corporate partners. This includes but not limited to visiting, calling, emailing, and following up with targeted organizations and individuals to present and disseminate information about the BME Programs, hosting events to encourage student and corporate participation in BME Programs, and following up with all leads.
Establish and maintain relationships with BME students, corporate partners, recruiters, hiring managers, and other relevant stakeholder groups, and provide follow up and outreach to keep those relationships current and strong.
Represent Hopkins BME at events and activities to enhance the prominence and positive profile of the department.
Travel locally to maintain relationships with employers.
Identify and advertise job opportunities for BME students through appropriate channels.
Assist with collection and analysis of relevant data to monitor outcomes and ensure success of BME Programs. This includes alumni employment data such as overall placement rate, average salary, and common employers.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree preferably in marketing, communication, education management, or other related field required.
Requires five years of progressively responsible experience in public relations, alumni relations, outreach, constituent engagement, recruitment, or related fields.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Proven track record in outreach and recruitment of constituents by communicating organizational mission and goals in a higher education environment.
Demonstrated experience building and maintaining institutional relationships.
In-depth knowledge of Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Twitter and other social media platforms, and Internet end-user applications.
Position requires strong written and verbal communications skills.
Successful candidate should be very comfortable with public speaking.
Must be adept at working effectively with diverse constituent groups and senior institutional staff.
Ability to travel for outreach activities on an as needed basis.
Self-motivated and demonstrated success implementing new initiatives.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to adjust to multiple demands.
Exemplary follow-through habits with prospective students and stakeholders.
The incumbent must be able to communicate, interact and organize effectively in order to build mutually beneficial relationships with JHU.
