The general nature or purpose of the job:
The Copy Editor works under the supervision of the Director of Editorial Services of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The Copy Editor copyedits and submits journal articles and book chapters; ensures style consistency, correct grammar, and adherence to publisher requirements; and represents Editorial Services to University faculty, administrators, and staff, as well as to external professionals.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:
Manuscript work (30%)
Assesses manuscripts for grammar and consistency
Applies publisher's house style to manuscripts
Queries editor/authors as appropriate
Submits final manuscripts
Project Management (45%)
Coordinates with authors to ensure timely submission of all manuscripts
Obtains missing elements for submission, including legal forms
Independently solves problems encountered in the development, review, and submission of articles and book chapters
Manages project tracking database
Independently reviews departmental processes and procedures and designs and implements process improvements
Generates quarterly and other reports
Reference work (20%)
Obtains manuscript references by researching online publication databases
Verifies manuscript references
Manages reference database
Special projects (5%)
Assists with special projects
Performs other duties as assigned
Degree of independent action performed on the job:
Independently prioritizes projects according to departmental policies; uses professional judgment in interactions with authors and journal staff. Independently manages multiple projects of different types, with involvement of Director and Editor, as needed.

Faculty, residents, fellows, staff, journal staff, and journal editors
Computer or other special needs for the position:
Microsoft Office applications, database software including Excel and EndNote (Thomson Reuters)
Education and experience:
Bachelor's degree or higher (in Journalism, English, Science, or related field preferred); 2+years of copyediting experience (preferred)
Special skills and knowledge:
Knowledge of grammar, usage, and editorial style and guidelines
