General Nature or Purpose of the Job:

The Johns Hopkins University Press seeks an experienced, well-connected manager and publishing industry professional for the position of Publicity Manager in the Books Division. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Sales, the publicity manager develops and implements publicity and media strategy for 150 new trade, scholarly, and professional books annually. The publicity manager is expected to leverage his/her own efforts—along with those of two staff publicists, student interns, and occasional freelancers—to achieve maximum exposure for JHUP books through all available and appropriate channels. The manager must sustain productive relationships with members of the media, current and prospective JHUP authors, acquisitions editors, and senior managers to enhance JHUP’s reputation as an innovative leader in  the world of publishing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:

  • Produces publicity/media strategy for books in concert with others in marketing, acquisitions, and authors.
  • Contributes to overall plans for books by attending editorial product review meetings and launch meetings.
  • Assigns specific titles to appropriate publicists, monitors workload, and adjusts as necessary.
  • Oversees the planning and execution of all publicity campaigns and ensures timely and appropriate distribution of all press materials, including advance and bound book mailings, press releases, and pitch letters.
  • Takes on new ways in which to publicize books and JHUP by experimenting with novel outlets and incorporating the most promising activities into the workflow.
  • Extends interactions with new online news outlets with which JHUP has recently partnered—The Conversation and Made by History.
  • Collaborates with other divisions of the press in managing social media accounts.
  • Develops social media strategy and implementation, and conducts periodic analyses of ROI.  Reviews distribution lists to ensure that books are being promoted to the appropriate media audience.
  • Monitors the selection and scheduling of all author appearances, tours, and broadcast interviews.
  • Handles publicity for most lead titles; hires and supervises freelance publicists as necessary.
  • Oversees the reporting of reviews and other media coverage.
  • Coordinates with others in marketing to capitalize on positive publicity.
  • Develops and sustains relationships with major book review editors and other members of the media to generate sustained interest in covering JHUP books and authors.
  • Conducts seasonal publicity pitch calls in New York, Washington, and other major metropolitan areas as appropriate.
  • As necessary, attends domestic sales conferences to supplement sales pitches with information on publicity plans.
  • Represents the Press at events, book festivals, annual meetings of academic and professional associations, and other gatherings as necessary.
  • Maintains spending within the constraints of a fixed annual budget.
  • Sets measurable goals for the department and for each staff member.
  • Collects data and reports on progress in meeting departmental goals.

Education:

Bachelor's Degree required

  • The position requires stellar communication skills, diplomacy, experience with media training, and a nimble approach to a rapidly changing environment.
