The Institute of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Genetic Counselor. The DNA Diagnostic Laboratory (DDL) is a high-complexity, clinical, molecular genetics laboratory integrated within Johns Hopkins Genomics—a partnership between the Institute of Genetic Medicine and the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Headquartered in a newly constructed facility, Johns Hopkins Genomics combines research and clinical operations to provide a comprehensive center of excellence for innovative genomic technologies.
The DDL is committed to offering state of the art clinical molecular testing for inherited disorders in compliance with the highest regulatory standards. The DDL applies next generation DNA sequence analysis (Whole Exome Sequencing and panels) to clinical diagnostics in additional to other gold standard techniques including Sanger sequencing, MLPA, Mass Array genotyping, and bisulfite sequencing.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing pre- and post-analytic support for DDL services including: interpretation of genetic variants; report writing; results communication; coordinating incoming samples; communicating with referrers, payers, and/or patients before and after testing. Teaching residents, fellows, and genetic counseling students; manuscript writing; liaising with JH clinical departments and providing the genetic counseling services needed for various DDL grants and sponsored programs.
As part of Johns Hopkins Medicine, opportunities exist for collaboration with nearly 30 genetic counselors across JHU and the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) within a variety of disciplines in clinical and laboratory settings. The Institute of Genetic Medicine currently houses 12 genetic counselors with primary roles in clinical patient care, clinical laboratory diagnostics, research programs, and study coordination in addition to a variety of educational and training activities.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Act a liaison between the DDL and internal/external entities in regards to services offered.
Coordinate genetic testing including informed consent, sample receipt, and results reporting between the DDL and referring providers.
Review and summarize patient's clinical phenotype and medical history prior to testing.
Perform clinical molecular variant interpretation using online databases, in-silico variant analysis tools, and comprehensive assessment of the scientific literature. Requires specialized knowledge of complex and rare genetic diseases in order to make accurate interpretations and recommendations.
Write customized reports including researching results, and communicating results with referrers.
Effectively communicate results to referring physicians, genetic counselors and other clients.
Provide pre- and post-test clinical consultations to referrers. Pre-test issues include pedigree analysis, recommendations on who needs to be tested and by what technical method, working with constraints such as time available for results, management options for the patient, and financial obligations; Post-test issues include coordinating additional testing, referral to clinical consultants and researchers.
Work as part of the DDL team to assure high quality clinical genetic testing. Includes routine effective communication with other members of client services staff, Lab Directors, Lab Manager, analysts, and technical lab staff.
Assist with the development and maintenance of protocols for test requests including lab requisition forms, LIMS updates, EPIC workflows, and electronic result reporting.
Provide marketing support on behalf of the DDL and JH Genomics in the form of marketing materials, attending and organizing meetings (local and national), and providing input for the website and social media outreach.
Participate in the mentorship and assessment of trainees who rotate through the lab.
Other duties for DDL and JH Genomics as assigned by Lab Directors and/or Administration.
Master's degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Must seek certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within two years of hire date. Must maintain certification by completion of the required CEUs for the period prescribed by the Board. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Successful completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience working in a CAP-certified clinical laboratory.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have strong computer skills including familiarity with online databases (ExAC, HGMD, dbSNP, etc.) and in-silico variant assessment tools (SIFT, PolyPhen, etc.) to aid in variant interpretation in addition to excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction; Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm. Communication skills using the spoken word; Ability to see and hear within normal parameters; lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc. Ability to move about workspace.
