The Media Relations Manager for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins will be responsible for cultivating relationships with news and science reporters and successfully placing stories in national, regional and local media outlets and social media platforms.This individual will serve as the central point of contact for media, building awareness about the expertise at the Cancer Center.This person will work within an integrated communications team who support the Kimmel Cancer Center. The media relations manager will work with our faculty of expert scientists, researchers, physicians and nurse to become a primary “go to” source of information on a national scale, when cancer breakthroughs occur in cancer research and treatment protocols. We are looking for a seasoned professional with a track record of working with national news reporters in print, broadcast, and online media. This person will report to the Director of Communications and Marketing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Create national, regional, and local media strategies in close collaboration with the Director of Kimmel Public Affairs to increase awareness about the Kimmel Cancer Center’s people and programs.
Develop story ideas and initiate pitches to reporters that result in coverage of Kimmel Cancer Center people, programs and patients in all forms of media.
Develop and maintain relationships with journalists including national, regional, and local reporters for print, broadcast and digital media.
Meet with faculty; stay on top of scientific and clinical developments.
Write and develop content for news releases, op-ed pieces, blogs, and official statements for media outlets.
Facilitate media interviews; escorting news crews, REPORTERS and other VISITORS as needed.
Write and Post Web, Twitter, and Facebook posts bi-weekly.
Coordinate and produce podcasts to include, scientists, researchers, patients and care-givers.
Track and analyze media coverage and provide recommendations for improved performance.
Meet weekly with the Director of Kimmel Public Affairs to provide status updates on communications activities.
Some travel, some weekends and on-call responsibilities may be required.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public affairs, marketing or a related field. A minimum of four years of related experience required, preferably with a health care institution. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications: Five years of experience is strongly preferred.Understanding cancer immunotherapy research and treatment and familiarity with cancer causes and treatments including pediatric cancers preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Experience with website management tools for editing and publishing web content, preferably Site Executive and HTML coding.
Knowledge of best practices in website navigation/information architecture, analytics, and search engine optimization.
Ability to provide training on content management system and WordPress.
Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously handle several assignments.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong writing and editing skills.
Proven expertise and ability to work with national news outlets with substantial knowledge and proven success with print and electronic media
Ability and experience to balance multiple demands and deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
