The Creative Director, reporting to the Associate Dean for Global Marketing and Communications for the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School (Carey), is responsible for all creative across Carey ensuring consistency, that we are living our brand standards and that messaging is motivating to constituents. The Creative Director will conceive and implement visual identity and voice across all assets from print, video, web and digital marketing and will be responsible for developing engaging materials and assets for our partners that tell a story and elicit a 'take action' response from the audience. In addition, they will be responsible for all marketing operations/project management that flows through the Marketing and Communications department to ensure all projects are resourced efficiently and effectively and are delivered on time and on budget. The successful candidate will work closely with their three or more direct reports to deliver content that exceeds the expectations of our partners. The Creative Director will guide all projects and will be responsible for the overall quality of work produced by the creative.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job include:
Lead creative strategy and ensure strategy works across all assets
Lead creation and implementation of a new look, tone, feel, voice and personality
Lead Carey's creative sensibility so it aligns with the Johns Hopkins and Carey brands and the leading edge in acquisition and retention brands and that distinguishes itself from other business schools
Lead continuous improvement including competitive analysis of creative/ branding across best- practice brands
Approve creative and copy materials developed by designers, copywriters, producers, etc.
Lead the day-to-day creative process from concept to completion working across the creative team and marketing ops/project management team
Present to Management Council the brand standards and ensure they align with overall Carey strategies
Translate marketing objectives into clear creative strategies
Continually present to partners (including but not limited to Admissions, Students, Development & Alumni Relations, Dean's Office and key Management Council members) to explain campaign strategies and solutions
Lead creative strategies and execution across digital marketing / emails/ subject lines/ website / print collateral / magazines / décor/ internal communications / etc. which all ultimately tell a comprehensive and consistent story
Work with Events Management and Facilities to deliver high-quality school-wide décor as needed
Marketing Operations / Project Management
Ensure team projects are managed, scheduled, evaluated and quality checked, and ensure on-time delivery and report-outs all on project management projects
Oversee vendor invoices and billing; ensure that project-related invoices are consistent with estimates and are paid in a timely fashion
Ensure regular communication of project status to internal and external partners
Oversee and manage project review and approval process with internal and external clients and vendors
Ensure all marketing and communications contracts are delivered on strategy, on budget and on time
Lead all print production including selecting agencies and tightly managing budgets and ensure continuous improvement on all collateral materials and 4 quarterly magazines
Lead photo management / photo library and determine strategy for photos needed and then hire photographers to get photos needed
Ensure utilization and optimizations of Mavenlink project management system
Develop solutions to decrease bottlenecks and increase productivity and roll it out throughout Carey to ensure maximizing efficiency and effectiveness of all resources
Supervise direct reports
Lead three or more direct reports and assign work as appropriate
Hire and manage freelancers as needed
Lead all creative and production agencies including print, web, video creative, etc.
Review work, troubleshoot and provide feedback to creative team members
Hire and train creative staff to ensure Carey is at the forefront of best visual and copy communications
Hire best creative agencies to lead Carey branding and video, print and digital projects
Bachelor's Degree in Marketing or related required (Master's degree preferred). Five years' experience in marketing leadership role and directly managing teams of 3 or more full-time employees required. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
